Let me briefly explain the above table:
Teacher A is one of the first grade teachers in the Hale Primary Elementary, School District 130, an inter-city school in Chicago, IL.
Teacher B is the other first grade teacher in the same, above-mentioned school. These two teachers were selected to teach Discover Intensive Phonics for Yourself to their students for one year. One teacher was a very good teacher, the other somewhat average, since it was important to be sure it was the method that made the difference and not just the teacher.
The row labeled Intensive Phonics Average indicates the average scores of the two classes.
The row labeled H.P. Basal Average refers to the average of the remainder of the children at Hale Primary who did NOT receive Discover Intensive Phonics.
The row labeled #130 Basal Average gives the average of the entire district.
These tests were based on the scores from the SAT tests in May of 1989. The students at Hale Primary represent a multitude of ethnic backgrounds.
The tests provide substantial evidence that Discover Intensive Phonics for Yourself does make a difference!
