EXPLICIT PHONICS INSTRUCTION
Discover Intensive Phonics for Yourself teaches explicit, intensive phonics. Explicit phonics incorporates blending and building from a single letter to a word. Implicit phonics does the reverse -- beginning with a whole word and looking at beginning sounds, ending sounds, and context clues. Explicit phonics is essential for students with dyslexia or other learning disabilities.
The code and rules governing written language are taught in a sequential, cumulative manner (see systematic, sequential, and cumulative). The program addresses "sight words" and teaches them from a linguistics standpoint, rather than rote memorization. Discover Intensive Phonics for Yourself addresses and teaches phonological awareness, phonological decoding, phonological encoding, phonological recording, print awareness, semantics, syntax, and segmentation. Additionally, it teaches language arts, listening skills, thinking skills, and improves self-esteem.
